What is BMW iDrive?

iDrive is BMW's infotainment Operating System designed to display intuitive vehicle controls with the simple touch of a button. With the latest iDrive 9, a new home screen was added with clearly arranged functions allowing greater ease of use for the BMW Curved Display. It also utilizes the QuickSelect concept that brings an improved menu structure that operates like consumer electronic devices.

The new graphical interface focuses on turning the Curved Display into a permanently viewable user interface, allowing the driver to access relevant settings in an easy-to-use fashion. You can even access the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, automatic intelligent climate control, or other menu options simply by touch.

What vehicles can run BMW iDrive 9?

Currently, BMW iDrive 9 will be included from the factory starting with 2024 X1 vehicles. More vehicles will be added in the future.

Does my BMW with BMW Operating System 9 require a continuous Internet connection?

Yes. To use the full range of functions of BMW iDrive with Operating System 9, such as cloud-based navigation from BMW Maps or the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, your BMW requires an Internet connection similar to other mobile devices. The mobile connection is established via a SIM card installed in your BMW and will remain connected even without the "BMW Digital Premium" offer.

What are Driver Profiles?

Each Driver Profile on the BMW iDrive system has a functionality specific to the driver. A default profile called "Guest" offers the least functionality with no saved settings made. Choosing the "Driver" profile allows for settings to be made to the vehicle that are saved, but with no link to a BMW ID. If a BMW ID is linked to a "Primary User", the driver will be able to save settings and have the added benefit of functions such as ConnectedDrive Store purchases, user administration, BMW Digital Key, and more.
